Safe Passage History
Safe Passage Tennis was created by humanitarian and tennis great Arthur Ashe in 1995. To create a Safe Passage for youth making the journey into productive adulthood using tennis as a vehicle to develop life skills. Safe Passage goal is to develop "champions citizens"
(est. 1995), formerly known as the Arthur Ashe Safe Passage Foundation Tennis Program, retains the mission set forth by its founder, Arthur Ashe: “Tennis courts, racquets, balls, nets, matches, coaches, counselors, teams, fans, scholarships, tournaments, trophies and events help kids develop the skills they need to succeed and survive the unpredictable streets of the inner city and surpass the expectations of the world around them.” Arthur Ashe was determined to break the stereotypes of tennis by introducing the sport to all people, regardless of socioeconomic background, color or creed. Safe Passage was created to address this need and has provided inner-city children with the direction and motivation needed to succeed on the court, in school and in life.

Safe Passage Mission
Our mission is to create a "Safe Passage" for youth making the journey into productive adulthood by using tennis as the vehicle for building self-esteem and character. Discipline, confidence and independent thinking are stressed.
Ultimately, Arthur hoped to accomplish with Safe Passage an ever growing program that teaches and develops children's interpersonal and social skills through exposure to tennis. The organization strives to develop skills that will better prepare children for their future by focusing on decision-making skills, problem solving, self-esteem, and teamwork. The development of a curriculum based on sportsmanship, not winning or losing, is key to maintaining a respect for the self and game.
Safe Passage Values
- Openness and Honesty
- Sportsmanship and fairness
- Friendship and Teamwork
- Inclusiveness & access to all

We want to develop strong partnerships and involvement of families, schools, and communities.
Young people don’t develop in a vacuum. Therefore, it is crucial to make sure their families, schools, and communities are engaged in the process. As sports-based youth development practitioners we want to:
Actively engage parents and other caregivers in the activities of participants.
Ensure that all stakeholders have a clear understanding of the roles and expectations associated with participation
Work to establish relationships with schools and other community organizations
Have a diversity statement
Provide materials and instruction in culturally and linguistically sensitive ways
